St Kilda, Melbourne

By digging a little deeper into Melbourne's social enterprises I find Tradeblock Cafe, a wonderfully bright and colourful cafe run by students of the Victorian College for the Deaf.

I place my order using a tablet at the till where I look up how to say soy flat white in Australian sign language. It's new and it's difficult, it makes me feel a little uncomfortable - way to gain some perspective!

This inspirational café aims to break down barriers by encouraging hearing customers to communicate with deaf employees in Auslan. Sitting down at a cosy wooden table, I eat a delicious slice of cake with my coffee and watch students and customers interacting in so many ways. Really can't wait to go back!

Temporarily closed due to Covid19 but check them out @tradeblockcafe_vcd and we'll hopefully see them opening up again soon ❤️
